Toddler Learning Centers — Early childhood development for ages 18-36 months, through games, crafts, storytelling, learning shapes, letters and numbers. Caregivers learn the importance of reading, speech development, nutrition, health care, and other subjects.

     Children's Library Discovery Center — Exhibits designed by the San Francisco Exploratorium help create a unique new interactive experience fostering children's literacy, science, math, engineering and technology.

     Family Literacy Program — Develops literacy skills for immigrant adults and children through joint activities and involvement.

     Cultural and Recreational Programs — Over 20,000 programs are offered each year introducing young and old to art, music, culture, science and history.

     The Central Library's Gallery — presents four shows each year of creative current artwork. The summer show offers interactive participation for children.

     Permanent WPA Collection

     BOOST (Best Out Of School Time) — Afterschool program serving nearly 2000 children daily at 63 local community libraries with one on one homework help and enrichment activities, 3-6pm every weekday.

     Summer Reading — More than 25,000 children participate in programs designed to keep critical reading skills active and enhanced during the summer.

     Workforce Development Programs for Teens — Teens help the public with computers, assist with afterschool programs and help librarians while they receive training and mentoring and gain future career skills.

     Youth Enpowerment Program — Takes at risk teens off the street and into programs at the Library supervised by youth counselors and social workers with computers, poetry readings, music, arts.

     Annual College Fair and Year-Round College Clubs — Reaches young people who want to attend college, but need help to plan for college, select and apply to colleges and find financial resources.

     ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program — helps thousands of new immigrants from 160 countries adapt to American life and culture through classes, small conversation practice groups, and computer-assisted learning. Health literacy and computer literacy classes are also available.

     Business Development & Employment Resources — International Resource Center offers materials and network connections and seminars on international topics and businesses. Two Job Centers provide information, materials, and one on one assistance.

     Adult Learning Centers — Bring literacy skills to adults most in need whose reading skills are below fifth grade levels through small group tutoring, computer-assisted instruction, basic education classes, and adult literacy materials such as audio and videotapes, and computer software.

     Outreach Services — Brings books and materials to the homebound and elderly, to children’s hospitals and homeless shelters.
